With a growth rate of 22 % this year, and more than 11 million thermal vehicules produced in 2009, China has become the 1st automobile manufacturer in the world by number of units produced. With a rate of 40% people living in cities now, aimed at reaching 70% in the next two decades, it is to say how important is the emission rate of these vehicules.

BYD is also manufacturing cars and has now sold 50 of its hybrid motor’s  F3 DM sedan cars to the Chinese administration. The car is 4.533 m long, weights 1560 Kg, a speed of 150 km/h and an autonomy of 100 km in all electric mode. The battery is reloaded in 9 hours on a 220V network, the 50% load being reached in 10 mn.

The mass production is scheduled in 2010 at a selling price of 150,000 CNY, which could be sold at a price in the range of 110,000 CNY,  would  a favourable policy towards this type of car be confirmed by the central government. The batteries account for one third about of the car price.

The 4.858 m long F6 DM is expected on the market late 2009 at a price of 180,000 CNY and the target for the all electric E6 (4,555 meters long, weight of 2020 kg, 160 km/h, 300 km autonomy) is to be available early next year at a price of 300,000 CNY. This car should  be also promoted on the US market.

Ten other large automakers in China such as Dongfeng, SAIC, FAW, Chery, BAW, GAIG, Chang An, Brilliance, Sinotruck, JAC have decided to set up a working group to develop a common electric solution.

State enterprises like the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) and the Dongfeng Motor Corporation (DMC), as well as private companies such as Chery and BYD invested substantial funds into developing hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles. The research and development of these vehicles are subsidized by the government in order to ensure market competitiveness and are supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and supervised by Minister Wan Gang, an engineering doctor who was trained in Germany and who has long been a hybrid-car expert.

A similar union had enabled the Chinese wind turbine manufacturers such as Sinovel, Goldwind, Dongfang, Shanghai Electric to place China at the fourth installed wind power position over a period of 3 years only. More than 11,000 MW of wind powered are now installed in China, to be compared to the 1000 MW of the year 2005.
